Understanding an Enlarged Prostate (BPH)

3 min read

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland that happens naturally with age. As the prostate grows, it can press on the urethra and make urination more difficult.

Common symptoms include a weak or interrupted urine stream, frequent urination (especially at night), a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying, and sudden urges to urinate. These symptoms can affect sleep and daily comfort even though BPH itself is not cancer.

Treatment depends on severity — mild cases are often managed with lifestyle changes and medication, while more significant symptoms may benefit from minimally invasive procedures that relieve the blockage with a faster recovery than traditional surgery.

BPH symptoms can overlap with other urological conditions, so a proper evaluation is important rather than assuming it's simply age-related.
